62-year-old Sofia man drowns in sea near Ahtopol.
A 62-year-old man from Sofia drowned in the sea near Ahtopol after entering the water from an unguarded area of Delfin Beach. His body was recovered by lifeguards and taken for an autopsy.
At around 12:10 on Sunday, the Tsarevo Police Department received a report that lifeguards had pulled a drowned man from the sea in the area of Dolphin Beach. According to initial information, the beachgoer had entered the water from an unguarded section of the beach.
The body of the 62-year-old Sofia resident was taken for an autopsy to the Forensic Medicine Department at UMHAT – Burgas.
The man entered the water in an unguarded beach area near Ahtopol, which contributed to the tragic outcome. The Burgas Interior Ministry Directorate has launched an investigation into the case, and pre-trial proceedings have been opened to clarify all circumstances and the exact causes that led to the incident.
Lifeguards warn that dead swell is appearing earlier and earlier, and the sea no longer fully follows the old familiar pattern under which it becomes more dangerous around Ilinden. Because of climate change, dead swell is increasingly being observed much earlier in the season.
The incident once again raises the issue of the risks of swimming outside guarded areas. Lifeguards advise tourists to enter the water only at guarded beaches and to follow the flag warning system.
