7-year-old in critical condition after Hemus crash

Hemus Motorway has been reopened to traffic after the serious crash that left three people dead.

Three people were killed in the incident, while two others who were injured are not in life-threatening condition. A seven-year-old child remains in critical condition and in a coma after undergoing life-saving surgery at the hospital in Shumen.

The tragic collision occurred around noon on Tuesday in a section with two-way traffic introduced because of repairs on the Varna–Shumen carriageway.

According to information from the medical facility, the child’s condition is extremely serious. The child suffered multiple injuries, including brain, chest and abdominal trauma, as well as fractures.

Life-saving surgery was performed, said the director of the Shumen hospital, Dr Dimitar Kostov.

A 67-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman died at the scene of the crash. The 11-year-old brother of the seven-year-old child, whose life doctors in Shumen are trying to save, died on the way to the hospital.

A 51-year-old minibus driver and a 24-year-old man from the car have been admitted to hospital. They sustained injuries but are not in life-threatening condition.

The 24-year-old man, who was travelling in the Volkswagen car, has fractures to his left ankle and left hand. The car collided head-on on the motorway with an oncoming Volkswagen Crafter minibus.

The driver of the minibus, a 51-year-old man, was transported to the Shumen hospital, where he was admitted for treatment with three fractured ribs. He is also not in life-threatening condition, the press centre of the Shumen Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry added.
