An emergency medical team in Ruse performed a risky delivery in an ambulance, where the baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck. Thanks to the quick reaction of the driver and assistant, the child was stabilized.
An ambulance driver and a medical assistant from the emergency service saved a baby during a risky birth on the way to the hospital in Ruse.
Little Venelin was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around him, but thanks to the professionalism and composure of the team, the child was stabilised in the ambulance.
The call was for a 24-year-old woman in labour with contractions in an outlying neighbourhood of Ruse. The team of medical assistant Dzhelil Eyubov and ambulance driver Boyan Spasov was dispatched to the address.
On the way to the hospital, it became clear that the baby would not wait. The birth had started, and we managed to free the baby’s head, the assistant said.
However, the umbilical cord was wrapped around the newborn’s neck, and his life was literally hanging by a thread.
Without hesitation or panic, the team took the necessary action. Ambulance driver Boyan Spasov also actively helped save the child.
Asked whether there should be a doctor in the ambulance for such calls, he explained that the doctor was at another address and that the teams are trained to act in critical situations.
The doctor is one, and at that moment he was at an address. That is why we are trained — to act in critical moments. A doctor cannot go to every address. Overall, there are seven or eight of them, while the standard is up to 15 — they are half the required number, Spasov added.
