Sofia City Prosecutor's Office Sets Bail of EUR 50 000 for Stoyan Mavrodiev.

The decision comes shortly after Stoyan Mavrodiev was formally charged with large-scale embezzlement in office. In determining the amount of bail, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office took into account the evidence gathered so far, which supports the suspicion of his involvement in the alleged offense.

Among the reasons for imposing bail are the defendant's health condition and the considerable time that has passed since the alleged crime. Prosecutors also stated that there is no risk of him committing another offense and that the risk of him absconding has decreased. Other relevant circumstances were also considered.

The former head of the Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB) was arrested in Belgrade in early June after being wanted since August 2024. He was detained upon arriving on a flight from Dubai and was later extradited to Bulgaria.

Mavrodiev was formally charged after Serbian authorities handed him over to the Bulgarian authorities. Upon his arrival, his lawyer, Emanuel Yordanov, said his client had initially been detained for up to 72 hours. The defense also argued that Mavrodiev was not the bank itself and that his signature was absent from the relevant documents.

The former banker is under investigation over a 150 million leva loan granted to companies linked to businessman Rumen Gaitanski. Earlier in the same case, Gaitanski was also arrested but was later released after the court ruled that the embezzlement allegation had not been sufficiently substantiated at that stage.
