Father and Son Found Alive After Venezuela Earthquakes.

French and American rescue teams discovered a father and son alive under the rubble in Caraballeda nearly four days after back-to-back earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck, completely destroying nearly 200 buildings in the area. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez on Sunday praised rescuers for still pulling survivors from the ruins.

Spanish and international rescue teams pulled a survivor from the rubble four days after the deadly earthquakes struck Venezuela. Footage showed search and rescue workers pulling out a father and son from under the rubble of a collapsed building. Search operations continue as crews race to find more survivors, with the death toll rising to more than 1,400.

President Delcy Rodríguez said that we always hold on to hope, as the discovery of earthquake survivors spurred fresh search efforts despite dwindling chances of survival. On Sunday, Rodríguez reported 1,450 dead — a toll expected to rise — with 3,150 people injured. About 774 buildings were badly damaged by the twin quakes that struck on Wednesday evening, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Sunday.

Even as rescue efforts continued, outbreaks of looting hit La Guaira, a port city near the country’s main international airport. Pharmacies, supermarkets and other businesses were ransacked, residents said, with some complaining of slow and limited post-quake aid from authorities. Millions more people were reported to lack sanitation and other basic needs after one of Latin America’s most devastating earthquake disasters.

U.S. helicopters ferried in aid, and 230 more U.S. military personnel were arriving to help expand airport capacity and reopen a key seaport to boost relief efforts, U.S. Southern Command said on Sunday.
