Borissov: GERB Is Preparing an Alternative Government

He emphasized that his party has been tolerating the current government for a month and a half, but expressed serious reservations about its actions. During his visit, he sharply criticized the current administration and commented on the country’s financial policy following the introduction of the single European currency.

The GERB leader expressed firm confidence in the future of his party, emphasizing the influx of new people. I am absolutely calm about the future of GERB, because completely new people are coming into the party, he said in Kyustendil. Borissov added that GERB’s goal is to build an alternative government so that people have a choice, hinting at preparations for future governing mandates.

Borissov sharply criticized the current government, saying it includes people who previously held high office but now present themselves as newcomers. There are people in the current government who have been ministers and prime ministers, and they come out as if they were just born, he commented. According to him, the administration includes figures with previous experience who are behaving inadequately in relation to the situations.

The GERB leader recalled the party’s policy during its time in government, especially regarding budgets. When we submitted conservative budgets, we never received support from the presidential institution, he said. The topic of the eurozone, of which Bulgaria has been part since the beginning of 2026, was also in focus in his remarks. Borissov emphasized the political compromises the formation had to make to guarantee the country’s successful accession and recalled that as early as the end of 2025 he had stated that adopting the euro remained his most important priority.

Borissov stressed that populist promises of higher pensions, higher salaries and more have always been central to GERB’s opponents.
