Bulgarian Navy Destroys Drone Near Albena
The Bulgarian Navy destroyed a drone in the waters off Albena. The object was found about 1.8 km from the coast, and the operation was carried out under strict safety measures.
A drone was destroyed on Sunday in the waters off the resort of Albena, the Bulgarian Navy said. A specialized team from Naval Base Varna — the group for reconnaissance, marking, retrieval, transport and destruction of unexploded ordnance — carried out the operation in strict compliance with safety measures, the fleet headquarters emphasized.
Servicemen from Naval Base Varna successfully completed the assigned task, which included reconnaissance, retrieval and subsequent destruction of the drone. The actions were taken on the order of the commander of the Navy and were approved by the chief of defence.
The unmanned aerial vehicle was found in the Black Sea waters slightly less than two kilometers east of the Albena resort complex, according to the Information Center of the Ministry of Defence. The object was located 10 cables, or approximately 1.8 kilometers, from the shoreline near the popular resort.
The destruction of the drone was carried out in strict compliance with all safety measures, demonstrating high professionalism, excellent training and readiness for action, the institution said. The Navy continues to carry out its tasks responsibly and in the interest of the country’s security, the Ministry of Defence added.
At this stage, there are no reports of other similar incidents near Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, nor are there details about the type, origin or purpose of the drone.
On June 26, the Navy destroyed a drifting drone found seven nautical miles east of Kranevo. The disposal of such objects is part of the fleet’s high-risk duties, given the situation in the Black Sea region.
