A deputy U.S. marshal was fatally shot while serving an arrest warrant in Alexandria, Louisiana. The suspect is in custody, and the FBI is investigating.
A suspect is in custody following an officer-involved shooting during a law enforcement operation in Alexandria, Louisiana, authorities said.
According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at about 3:00 p. Sheriff's detectives, together with members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force, were conducting an operation in the Rutland Road area to arrest a wanted fugitive when the shooting occurred.
The FBI's New Orleans Field Office said it responded to the incident alongside the Alexandria Police Department, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana State Police.
Because the investigation remains active and ongoing, the FBI said it could not provide additional details at this time.
"Fugitive operations are some of the most dangerous situations that law enforcement officers face because they are often pursuing people who know they are wanted, are on alert, and have already decided they are not going to be taken into custody without a fight, "Chittum said.
Alexandria is located approximately 95 miles northwest of Baton Rouge.
