Ekaterina Dafovska Survives Serious Crash on Trakia Highway.

Olympic biathlon champion Ekaterina Dafovska was involved in a crash at the 280th kilometre in the Yambol area while travelling from Burgas to Sofia.

The car driven by the champion from Chepelare suddenly spun in the opposite direction of traffic.

According to eyewitnesses, the Subaru with Smolyan registration plates, in which Dafovska was travelling, went out of control and overturned several times on the roadway.

Eyewitnesses said it was a miracle that she escaped with only minor injuries. The fact that she managed to get out of the crushed vehicle on her own was described as extremely fortunate, given the severity of the impact at high speed on the motorway.

Bulgarian Biathlon Federation President Atanas Furnadzhiev officially confirmed the information about the incident. According to him, the condition of Bulgaria’s most successful winter sports athlete is not life-threatening, and she escaped with only a fright and minor injuries.

Her car overturned, but Dafovska is in stable condition, with a lightly scratched nose, Furnadzhiev said.

The biathlete, who in addition to her Olympic title from Nagano in 1998 also has a European gold medal and bronze medals from world championships, had been in the seaside city at the invitation of organisers of a sporting event.
