Sofia Municipality Teams Clean Up Storm Damage

Sofia Municipality said that more than 100 reports were received and processed overnight, mainly related to fallen trees and branches, local flooding and traffic disruptions. More than 10 emergency teams remained on site this morning, continuing to process reports of fallen trees and branches, damage to municipal infrastructure and the necessary safety measures.

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev wrote on his official Facebook profile that teams would remain on the ground until every trace of the storm had been cleared. He said the first task had been to clear the locations where fallen trees and branches were obstructing traffic, while work to repair damage to municipal infrastructure begins today. We responded immediately, and until late last night Sofia Municipality teams did not stop working to resolve the problems, Terziev said. He noted that the storm was short but caused serious damage in many places. The companies responsible for maintaining green areas and cleanliness have also joined Sofia Municipality teams, working overtime side by side with firefighters and volunteers.

By late afternoon, Sofia Municipality had received around 100 reports of fallen branches and trees, flooded road sections and underpasses in Sofia because of the heavy rain. Mayor Vasil Terziev expressed regret over the loss of beautiful old trees brought down by the storm. He assured that new trees would be planted in the autumn to restore what had been lost.

According to Terziev, the storm showed how important continuous maintenance of urban infrastructure is. He explained that thanks to this work, the hundreds of litres of water that fell within minutes drained away quickly. In his words, the most important thing is that no people were injured.
