Fatal crash on the Republic Pass, driver killed.
A serious accident on road II-55 near Gurkovo claimed the life of a car driver who entered oncoming traffic during an improper overtaking maneuver. The truck driver tried to avoid the collision, but the crash was inevitable.
One person was killed in a fatal road accident overnight on the Republic Pass (Hainboaz). The crash occurred on Road II-55 near the town of Gurkovo after the driver of a passenger car attempted to overtake another vehicle, entered the oncoming lane, and collided head-on with a heavy goods vehicle.
According to preliminary findings from the European Center for Transport Policies, the accident was caused by an unsafe overtaking maneuver by the passenger car driver. The truck driver reacted immediately and attempted to steer away from the collision, but the short distance between the vehicles made the crash unavoidable.
According to the initial information, a passenger car entered the oncoming lane while attempting an improper overtaking maneuver and collided head-on with a heavy truck on Road II-55 near Gurkovo, in the Hainboaz area, the non-governmental organization said.
The driver of the passenger car died at the scene as a result of the impact.
According to the European Center for Transport Policies, 17 people have lost their lives and 309 have been injured on Bulgaria's roads during the first 13 days of this month alone. Since the beginning of the year, road fatalities have reached 234, while more than 4,000 people have been injured.
Authorities and road safety experts continue to urge drivers to exercise greater caution and avoid unnecessary risks, especially on heavily trafficked and mountainous roads such as the Republic Pass. The route is considered one of Bulgaria's most dangerous road sections because it carries heavy traffic between Danube Bridge 1 and the Turkish border, offers limited overtaking opportunities, and has a long history of serious crashes.
