IOC provisionally lifts suspension of Russian the Russian Olympics Committee, opening door for LA28 participation.

Russian athletes could be allowed to compete for their country at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles after the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee.

No decision has yet been made on whether Russia will be allowed to display its flag, colours and anthem at the Olympic Games. The decision is unlikely to trigger full participation of Russian athletes across all sports, as many international federations continue to maintain separate bans.

The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday that its executive board had provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. This could allow Russian athletes to return to many international competitions, including Olympic qualifiers for Los Angeles 2028.

However, the IOC has not yet decided whether Russia will be allowed to display its flag and colours or have its anthem played at the Games. The Committee added that it would continue to closely monitor Russia.

Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev said the IOC’s decision should clear the way for Russian athletes to make a full return to the international sporting stage.

The IOC insisted that it would continue to support Ukraine.

We do not condone any wars, including this one. We will continue to support Ukraine as we have since this started. But I do not believe athletes should pay the price, the Committee said.

The decision marks the latest step by the IOC toward easing Russia’s return to international sport after it urged federations in December to readmit Russian and Belarusian youth athletes under 23.
