U.S. Official Says Iran Agreed to End Nuclear Program Under New Deal.
A U.S. official said Iran accepted terms to end its nuclear program and eliminate its nuclear material. Tehran, however, disputed parts of the reported agreement, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz and uranium enrichment.
According to the official, cited by AFP, Tehran accepted five key points: Iran’s nuclear material will be destroyed or removed, the nuclear program will be terminated, its assets will not be unfrozen until it fulfills the conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will remain open, and Iran will no longer finance terrorist groups.
Earlier today, Iran’s official state news agency IRNA reported that under the terms of a draft agreement with Washington aimed at ending the war, Tehran would not relinquish control over the Strait of Hormuz and that the Islamic Republic would continue to firmly defend its right to enrich uranium.
Trump reacted sharply to the Iranian comments, writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, that they had nothing to do with the terms that were actually agreed upon.
Vance said that Iranian assets would not be unfrozen under any potential peace agreement and added that the deal was structured to deny Iran economic benefits if it failed to meet its obligations.
Vance also said he had seen a great deal of misinformation regarding the potential agreement on opening the Strait of Hormuz and ending Iran’s nuclear program.
Lebanese Islamist and pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah expressed confidence today that any agreement between the United States and Iran would include arrangements concerning Lebanon, Reuters reported. The group entered the regional conflict in support of Iran on March 2, launching attacks against targets.
