At the funeral of assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, crowds chanted for the killing of Donald Trump, while his successor Mojtaba Khamenei remained absent from public view.
The funeral was delayed because of the war.
Massive crowds gathered in Tehran for a second day to mourn Khamenei’s death, with chants calling for revenge against the U.S. and Israel. The funeral prayers for the former supreme leader and four other family members created a political spectacle at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, blending grief with calls for revenge.
Holding Iranian flags and pictures of their martyred leader, and waving red flags symbolising vengeance, the crowds were far larger and more militant than on Saturday, the first day of the elaborately planned funeral, designed to show the world that Iran has social resilience and the determination to preserve its independence.
Three sons of former Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei made a rare public appearance on the second day of his funeral, but there was still no sign of his successor and other son, Mojtaba Khamenei. Iranian television showed Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud Khamenei praying behind coffins laid out in the vast courtyard of Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, a sprawling religious complex in Tehran.
Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence from the mourning ceremonies is believed to be linked to concerns over Israeli threats to his life.
Iran’s highest-ranking political and military figures also attended the funeral ceremony, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani. The prayer ceremony drew large crowds in Tehran amid heightened regional tensions and growing public demands for retaliation against the United States and Israel.

His body will be carried in procession through prominent Shia holy sites in neighbouring Iraq, such as Karbala and Najaf, as well as Qom and Mashhad in Iran, where he will be buried.
