Cable thefts left Levski Blvd. in Varna without lighting.
Varna Municipality is expected to decide how to restore lighting along Levski Boulevard after repeated theft and vandalism. Two restoration options are under consideration, with significantly different costs.
A response is expected from the leadership of Varna Municipality, which will determine the assignment of works to restore the street lighting along Levski Boulevard. The section became the target of repeated vandalism and theft at the end of last year, and restoration options have been under discussion ever since, according to the weekly report of Odessos District for the period June 8–12, published on Facebook by district mayor Yanislava Shopova.
The lighting near the round about on Devnya Boulevard frequently suffers damage due to recurring thefts of power supply cables and the breaking of pole access covers. According to the district administration, there are two possible technological options for restoring the lighting along Levski Boulevard: underground restoration costing €98,649.75 excluding VAT, and overhead restoration costing €20,200.41 excluding VAT.
If the underground option is selected, the stated amount would prevent Odessos District from undertaking other replacement and environmental improvement projects unless additional funding is provided by the municipality. A procurement procedure has already been initiated, and the delivery period is expected to be longer than usual because the specific model required is specialized and supplied by a manufacturer outside the European Union.
Separately, Odessos District also reported damage to lighting fixtures and a park lighting pole caused by a broken tree branch behind the Cathedral.
