Man Charged With Growing Cannabis Near Lilyanovo

Under the direction and supervision of the Blagoevgrad District Prosecutor’s Office, investigative actions are being carried out in pre-trial proceedings over the illegal cultivation of cannabis plants and possession of high-risk narcotic substances, the Sofia Appellate Prosecutor’s Office said. The case was reported earlier today by the Blagoevgrad Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry.

The prosecutor’s office said that 113 cannabis plants had been grown illegally in a field in the Papavoto area near the village of Lilyanovo. A field drug test returned a positive result for cannabis, or marijuana. On June 13, during a search of a house in the village of Lilyanovo, law enforcement officers found and seized two items containing dry green grassy matter — one on a landing in front of the entrance door on the second floor and another in a room on the ground floor.

According to the investigation, sufficient evidence has been gathered linking a 44-year-old man to the acts. He has been charged with illegally cultivating cannabis plants and possessing high-risk narcotic substances, and by order of a prosecutor he has been detained for up to 72 hours.

The Blagoevgrad District Prosecutor’s Office is expected to submit a request to the court for the man to be remanded in custody, the prosecution also said.
