Sofia Launches Emergency Street Washing in Lyulin After Fire.

Sofia Municipality is carrying out additional street washing in the Lyulin district as a measure to improve air quality after last week’s major fire.

Crews are working to remove residual particles in the 3rd, 4th and 5th microdistricts, as well as along Bansko Shose Boulevard. The municipality also took over the cleaning of the boulevard, even though the route is managed by the Road Infrastructure Agency.

Sofia Municipality continues to monitor air quality data in the area. According to the municipality, the data confirm that the situation has fully stabilised after the incident.

The mobile automatic measuring station will remain positioned in the area for another 9 days as an additional precaution. The municipality is urging citizens to monitor real-time air quality data through its official web platform.

Initially, after the fire at the waste facility near Sofia’s Lyulin district on July 1, Sofia Municipality deployed a mobile air quality monitoring station. In the first hours after the incident, it did not report concerning levels.

The situation became more complicated the following day, when a change in weather conditions and the weakening of the wind caused the smoke cloud to linger. Elevated levels of benzene were then recorded in the area.
