NHIF Director Orders Audits for Period 2023-2026

The governor of the National Health Insurance Fund, Dr. Asen Medzhidiev, has signed orders for inspections to be carried out by the Internal Audit unit and the Inspectorate at the NHIF, the Health Insurance Fund’s press centre said.

The inspections cover the period from 2023 to 2026, when the institution was headed by Stanimir Mihaylov. They were ordered at the governor’s initiative as part of a comprehensive review of the institution’s activities after he took office.

As part of the inspections, all relevant management acts, decisions and actions related to the subject of the assigned checks, as well as their financial aspects, will be analysed.

The areas of inspection include compliance with regulatory and internal departmental acts in the Public Procurement department, the conformity of approved internal departmental acts with the current legal framework in the Medicinal Products and Dietary Foods directorate, as well as compliance with the acts in the Medical Devices and Assistive Devices directorate.

The activity related to applying for, approving and paying for treatment authorisations for persons under the age of 18 at the NHIF Central Administration will also be checked.

The decision is part of the new leadership’s policy to consistently strengthen transparency, accountability and good governance at the NHIF, the statement said. It was also prompted by heightened public interest in the institution’s work, including issues raised publicly about the activities of previous leaderships.

After the inspections are completed, reports with findings and recommendations will be prepared.
