Pakistan Launches Operation Against Taliban Hideouts
Pakistan launched an operation along the Afghan border targeting Pakistan Taliban hideouts after multiple militant attacks across the country, officials said.
In a post on social media, Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the operation was launched in response to multiple attacks by armed groups across the country. The strikes came a day after fighters armed with guns and explosives killed three soldiers in Karachi.
Tarar said Pakistan’s latest operation along the Afghan border targeted hideouts and safe havens of the Pakistan Taliban. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on the social media platform X that the action was launched in response to multiple militant attacks across the country, the report said.
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in attacks targeting police and security forces in recent years. Authorities have blamed the Pakistan Taliban, known by the acronym TTP, and allied armed groups for most of the violence. The operation came a day after fighters armed with guns and explosives targeted the regional headquarters of the paramilitary Rangers in the southern port city of Karachi, killing three soldiers.
Security forces killed three attackers and arrested another assailant, whom the military identified as an Afghan national, in wounded condition. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of the Pakistan Taliban, claimed responsibility for the Karachi attack in a statement on Saturday night.
There was no immediate response from Afghanistan. Reuters could not immediately verify the report.
