Pirogov Doctors Operate on Child With Epidermolysis Bullosa.
Doctors at Pirogov performed surgery on both hands of a boy with epidermolysis bullosa, with the participation of Dr Paige Fox from Stanford Medicine.
The intervention was carried out with the participation of Dr Paige Fox from Stanford Medicine in the United States and in partnership with EB DEBRA Bulgaria.
The surgery on both of the boy’s hands was performed jointly by a team from the Burn and Plastic-Reconstructive Surgery Clinic at Pirogov and Assoc. Prof. The aim of the operation is to significantly improve the patient’s functional outcome and quality of life. The boy has already been discharged and is recovering in a family environment.
Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic disease in which the skin is extremely fragile and easily injured. In more severe forms, it leads to deformities of the hands and feet, fusion of the fingers, or pseudosyndactyly, and significant disability. In this context, highly specialized surgical and reconstructive care, based on modern approaches and a multidisciplinary team, is key to preserving function and ensuring the greatest possible independence for patients, Pirogov said.
Dr Paige Fox is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with many years of experience in complex reconstructive operations involving soft tissue and peripheral nerves, the statement said. The first day was dedicated to a theoretical discussion between Assoc. Fox, Bulgarian and Serbian surgeons and dermatologists from university clinics, followed by an active exchange of experience on the latest international practices.
The boy is due to undergo rehabilitation, Pirogov said. The intervention was broadcast and observed in real time by the specialists present, the hospital added.
