Consumer basket drops by one euro in a week.
The consumer basket in Bulgaria has become cheaper by one euro in a week due to the start of the seasonal decline in food prices.
Analyses by the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets show that the total value of the products in the consumer basket currently stands at54.
Despite the reported weekly decrease, the same products were cheaper at this time last year, costing53. Experts explain the higher value of goods this summer with accumulated inflation during the year and higher fuel prices.
These fluctuations are strongly felt by citizens, as food costs make up the largest share of household budgets — nearly 30%, significantly more than the amounts spent on transport and home maintenance.
During the latest reporting week, different groups of goods showed notable price movements. The sharpest decrease was recorded in the price of green peppers, down 21.38%, followed by courgettes at 12.70%, lentils at 6.95% and carrots at 6.19%.
The most significant increase was registered in tomatoes, up nearly 17.73%. Prices also rose for apples by 10.36%, cucumbers by 7.34% and cherries by 6.06%.
Consumers are reacting differently to the situation on the markets. A shopper named Rusi says he travels from an outer neighbourhood to the city centre because the vegetables he bought there cost him6 — much less than what is offered in neighbourhood shops.
