Government Returns Plamen Tonchev as Head of DANS, Plans to Close Commission on Records.

The government will propose Plamen Tonchev to head SANS again. This is stated in Decision 482 of the Council of Ministers dated June 29, published on the Public Consultations Portal. With the document, the cabinet submits the nomination for consideration by the National Assembly. The decision was signed by Prime Minister Rumen Radev.

Plamen Tonchev took office as chair of SANS in May 2021. He had already been appointed head of the agency in 2021 by decree of Rumen Radev, who was president at the time.

Rumen Radev’s government will return Plamen Tonchev as chair of SANS. This will be Tonchev’s second term at the head of the counterintelligence agency.

Before the end of his term in April 2023, he was elected with 120 votes in favor, 78 against and five abstentions as chair of the Commission for the Disclosure of Documents and Announcing Affiliation of Bulgarian Citizens with State Security and the Intelligence Services of the Bulgarian People’s Army, known as the Dossier Commission.

The Dossier Commission, which Plamen Tonchev headed over the past year, may be closed under the plans of Radev’s government.
