Prosecution Seeks MP Angel Georgiev’s Parliamentary Immunity

Acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova has requested the first parliamentary immunity waiver since taking office. She submitted a request to the registry of the 52nd National Assembly seeking the removal of the immunity of Vazrazhdane MP Angel Georgiev.

Georgiev is charged with causing bodily injury to a police officer motivated by hooliganism and with aggravated hooliganism. He is a co-defendant alongside former Vazrazhdane MP Veselin Veshev, with both facing charges for criminal offenses, including inflicting minor bodily injury on police officers, resisting law enforcement authorities, and hooliganism.

According to the prosecution, the continuation of the already initiated criminal proceedings against Georgiev before the Sofia District Court can take place only with the permission of the National Assembly or with the written consent of the MP. The criminal case against him was suspended because of his parliamentary immunity.

The two defendants claim that they were assaulted by police officers, who allegedly used an electroshock device against one of them. The case has been ongoing for six years, while the statute of limitations for the bodily injury charge is 7.5 years and 15 years for the hooliganism charge.

Angel Georgiev was declared a member of parliament and, after taking the oath of office on April 30, 2026, obtained parliamentary immunity. Therefore, his immunity must be lifted again for the trial to continue.
