U.S. strikes Iran, Iran retaliates against Bahrain and Kuwait amid Khamenei funeral.

Sirens sounded in Kuwait on Wednesday as the country’s air defences were activated to intercept incoming fire after U.S. airstrikes targeted Iran.

Iran retaliated by striking sites in Bahrain and Kuwait. The attacks on shipping and the subsequent strikes came during the dayslong funeral for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 at the age of 86.

The United States launched strikes on Iran early Wednesday in response to what it described as Tehran’s attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Jon Gambrell of The Associated Press in Dubai, the assault was part of a U.S. effort that also revoked Iran’s ability to openly sell crude oil on the world market.

Iran responded with strikes targeting Bahrain and Kuwait.

Central Command said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats were hit in a new wave of U.S. military strikes against Iran on Tuesday, after three tankers were struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz.

The regional exchange of fire raised the risk that an interim agreement to halt fighting could collapse, putting the Middle East once again at risk of a wider conflict.

That heightened concerns that the broader conflict in the region could resume, while oil prices surged.

The funeral, which ends Thursday, had been seen as a period of lower tensions, although mourners have repeatedly called for the killings of U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
