Measures to Reduce Road Traffic Injuries Discussed at SDA Meeting.
The goal is not only to take short-term measures to limit road traffic injuries but also to achieve long-term measures in the future to address this phenomenon. At the meeting, experts identified measures to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries in accidents in Sofia.
The Sofia Directorate of the Interior is working on introducing additional regulations for the movement of electric scooters and on tackling violations committed with individual electric vehicles owned by private individuals.
For a road accident to happen, the road users involved are different — starting with pedestrians, car drivers, as well as people who use individual electric vehicles, or so-called scooters, Peltekov said.
He stated that similar measures are expected to be presented at national level as well.
The director of the capital’s police said further meetings would be held with both experts and state institutions, where additional measures and deadlines for implementation would be presented. According to him, the Interior Ministry alone is not competent to deal with the problem.
Peltekov also explained that the cameras installed at the entrances and exits of Sofia would be used only for road safety purposes.
He appealed to parents to talk to their children and encourage them to behave more responsibly on the road.
The focus of the meeting was the opinion of road safety experts from non-governmental organisations, reducing road trauma and limiting the number of injured and killed on the roads.
Former Traffic Police director Tencho Tenev said that this was the first time a director of the Sofia Directorate of the Interior had organised such a meeting with road experts and non-governmental organisations.
According to him, the analysis of the security environment in relation to road trauma shows that both control and preventive actions must continue in order to improve the safety of all road users, especially at the height of the summer season.
