Stoyan Mavrodiev Released on Bail of 50 000 Euro.
Former Bulgarian Development Bank CEO Stoyan Mavrodiev was released on bail of 50,000 euro after being extradited from Serbia, with the court citing no risk of flight or further crimes.
Bulgarian prosecutors have imposed a50,000 bail measure on Stoyan Mavrodiev, the former Chairman of the Management Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB).
In determining the measure, prosecutors considered the evidence gathered during the pre-trial proceedings, which they say supports a reasonable suspicion of his involvement in the alleged offense. They also cited the absence of a risk of further criminal activity, the reduced risk of absconding, the time elapsed since the alleged offense, Mavrodiev's health condition and other relevant circumstances.
Mavrodiev was returned to Bulgaria from Serbia after voluntarily agreeing to extradition. He was initially detained for up to 72 hours under a prosecutor's order before being released on bail.
His lawyer, Emanuel Yordanov, said Mavrodiev had been formally charged with embezzlement in office. According to the attorney, his client voluntarily returned to Bulgaria to actively participate in the proceedings and help clarify the facts.
He told me he was returning so he could actively participate in the proceedings and establish the truth, Yordanov said, adding that bail is the appropriate measure in such cases.
The lawyer also noted that Mavrodiev had previously testified as a witness when the investigation began but did not provide a statement after being charged. He added that his client also had personal matters to resolve in Bulgaria.
The investigation concerns a loan issued by the Bulgarian Development Bank to a company linked to businessman Rumen Gaitanski. According to the allegations in the case, part of the funds ultimately reached Ahmed Dogan.
