The Burgas District Court has kept 56-year-old truck driver Angel Iliev in custody after he was accused of causing the serious crash on the Trakia Highway near Karnobat, which killed a 40-year-old man and injured two others. The prosecution requested the most severe detention measure – custody.
Before the court, the defendant said the accident was caused by a burst tire, which made the truck uncontrollable. The defense requested a lighter measure and asked for additional technical expert examinations to clarify the causes of the crash.
According to the lawyer, the truck was traveling at 90 km/h and was not exceeding the speed limit. There are absolutely no violations by the driver at this stage, he said.
The defense also criticized the condition of the road infrastructure. According to lawyer Borislav Yankov, state institutions were responsible for allowing this type of road barrier to be installed in the section. I would say they are decorative, he added.
The crash is the latest serious incident involving trucks on the Trakia Highway, raising questions about the reasons behind the increasing number of similar accidents.
I am telling you that he was driving within the limit, definitely below 90 km/h, the defense said.
