White House officials last year awarded a no-bid contract worth up to $500 million for the construction of a ballroom in the building’s East Wing, the American newspaper The Washington Post reported, as cited by Reuters. The outlet said it had obtained a copy of the contract.

Construction has been under way since last autumn on the site of the former East Wing of the White House. The new ballroom is expected to accommodate significantly larger state banquets than the existing rooms.
