Two Bulgarian Children Die in Hot Car in Cyprus.
A brother and sister, aged 8 and 10, who had arrived from Bulgaria to spend the summer with their father, died in Cyprus. Authorities are investigating their deaths in a locked car.
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday evening in a community in Famagusta District that falls under the jurisdiction of the British military base of Dhekelia. The victims were a brother and sister, aged 8 and 10, who had arrived from Bulgaria to spend their summer holiday with their father.
The report about the two unconscious children was submitted to the British base police shortly after 6:00 p. m. British police officers from the nearby Dhekelia military base immediately arrived at the scene, and an ambulance transported the minors to a hospital in Famagusta District, where doctors on duty could only confirm their deaths.
According to Xylofagou Mayor Georgios Ioulianos, the father and his partner left for work on Saturday morning, while the children were left alone. It is believed that they later entered a car parked nearby and, for reasons still unclear, remained locked inside.
According to initial information in Cypriot media, it is entirely possible that the children suffocated in the overheated car, but the exact causes will become clear after forensic examinations. Visible burns were found on their bodies, caused by prolonged exposure to the strong sun inside the vehicle.
Following the incident, local authorities detained the father and the stepmother of the two victims as suspects in alleged criminal negligence directly linked to the deaths of the minors. The investigation continues under the supervision of the competent authorities in Cyprus.
