Varna Summer Theatre to Be Transformed
The Summer Theatre in Varna will undergo full reconstruction and modernization under an urban development project. New structures, renovated facilities, and improved visitor comfort are planned.
The renovation is one of four activities under the project Varna – a city open to the sea, a cultural, tourist, educational and health center, caring for people and a driver of sustainable development in the Northeastern region, implemented under direct grant procedure BG16FFPR003-2.002 Support for Integrated Urban Development in 40 Urban Municipalities of the Regions Development Programme 2021–2027.
The Summer Theatre complex was built in 1957 on an area of 6 decares. With a capacity of nearly 2,400 seats, it hosts some of the most significant festivals and cultural events in Varna. The complex includes four buildings – a main stage, service and technical facilities, a ticket center, and adjacent spaces. It is located in the historic core of the Sea Garden – an area under cultural and historical protection status, which is why all activities will be coordinated with the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute for Immovable Cultural Heritage.
The project предусматриes a full reconstruction, modernization, equipment, and furnishing of the complex, as well as the renewal of the surrounding spaces and access routes. Among the most significant improvements is the construction of a movable pergola-type roof, which will for the first time allow events to be held in adverse weather conditions. For greater audience comfort, protective awnings will be installed above the seating areas. A complete renovation is also planned for the main service building, dressing rooms, makeup rooms, storage facilities, the orchestra pit, and the two auxiliary buildings at the theater entrances.
