Vucic Announces Resignation and Snap Elections in Serbia.

The protests began after the tragedy at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, when the collapse of a canopy killed 16 people. The demonstrations spread across the country, with protesters, opposition forces and human rights organisations saying the incident was a sign of major problems related to poor management of construction projects and corruption.

News of the resignation came after about a year and a half of anti-government protests led by students. Days ago in the city, students honoured the memory of the victims who died in 2024 and demanded immediate early elections. Activists from the student movement say they want to challenge Vucic and the Serbian Progressive Party in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

Vucic announced that the party’s list for the upcoming elections would be called United Serbia. He added that he would take part in the campaign and help secure victory in the upcoming vote, including the early parliamentary election, initially scheduled for next year, but he did not set a date for the elections.

Vucic did not specify exactly when he would resign or when he might dissolve parliament — a condition for holding early parliamentary elections. His second and final presidential term was due to expire in mid-2027, Reuters recalls.

He made the statement during a rally of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in front of the National Assembly building in Belgrade. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he would remain in office for a few more weeks before resigning. The Serbian president also announced early presidential and parliamentary elections.
