Zelensky proposes replacing Prime Minister Shmyhal, expects government changes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he has proposed a new role for Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko as part of a broader government reshuffle.

I am grateful to Yulia for her clear, stable, and effective work as Prime Minister, for her many years of dedicated service to Ukraine's team, and I have offered her the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner, Zelenskyy wrote on X. I expect that, together with members of parliament, we will make the necessary changes to the Government of Ukraine, he added.

Zelenskyy said the changes are needed to implement a renewed political strategy but did not provide further details. He did not specify which position he had offered Svyrydenko or who might succeed her. Svyrydenko has served as prime minister since July 2025.

The Ukrainian president also announced upcoming changes among the leadership of law enforcement and security agencies. According to opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak, Svyrydenko is likely to become Ukraine's ambassador to the United States.

Under Ukrainian law, the resignation of the prime minister must be approved by parliament and results in the resignation of the entire cabinet.

That means she will leave the post of prime minister and the entire government will be replaced, Zhelezniak wrote on Telegram.

Lawmakers have named several possible successors, including former prime minister and current Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, and Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretskyi.
