We Continue the Change Launches Petition for Concrete Barriers on Highways.

A petition titled Concrete Highway Barriers, Not Barriers Like Breadsticks has been launched by We Continue the Change. The party says it is calling for dangerous median barriers on Bulgaria's motorways to be inspected and replaced with infrastructure capable of saving lives.

The initiative follows a series of road accidents in which heavy trucks have broken through central barriers, crossed into oncoming traffic and caused fatal crashes.

In the latest incident, which occurred on July 10 near the 312th kilometer of the Trakia Motorway, a heavy truck broke through the median barrier and struck two passenger vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. One person was killed at the scene and two others were injured.

Through the petition, We Continue the Change is calling for an independent technical inspection of motorway median barriers and the public release of the findings. The party also demands the immediate replacement of dangerous, damaged or inadequate barriers.

The political party further calls for an audit of public procurement procedures, including technical specifications, contract prices, contractors, project acceptance procedures and oversight.

According to the party, responsibility should be sought from contracting authorities, contractors and supervisory bodies if violations are identified.

Human life cannot be worth less than a high-quality safety barrier, the party said in a Facebook post urging citizens to support the petition.

The party added that Bulgarian taxpayers spend millions on the construction and maintenance of roads and safety infrastructure, which should be able to withstand the real traffic load and severe road accidents.
